    Overview

    Details of Fibroids

Fibroids are benign or noncancerous growths of the uterus that usually appears during childbearing years. It is a tumor made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue.  It is also known as uterine fibroids or uterine leiomyomas. The size of fibroids in the body is like seedlings and undetectable by the eye, to voluminous masses that may enlarge and distort the uterus. An individual can have a single fibroid as well as multiple ones in his body.  In some rare cases, multiple fibroids expand the uterus in such a form that it reaches the rib cage.

It happens to many women during their lifetime; however, an individual might not be aware of uterine fibroids in the body as it often causes no symptoms.  Some women might have painful or heavy periods.

    Types of Fibroids

    • Subserosal fibroids: It is the most common type of fibroids that may push outside of the uterus into the pelvis.
    • Intramural fibroids: It is a form of fibroids that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus.
    • Submucosal fibroids: It is an uncommon form of fibroids that can grow into open space inside the uterus and may include stalk.

    Science

The exact cause of fibroids is still known, however, there are some factors which develop fibroids. These are:

    • Genetic changes – Changes in the gene that differ from normal uterine muscle cells develop fibroids.
    • Hormones – Estrogene and progesterone hormones that stimulate the development of the uterine lining at the time of the menstrual cycle in preparation for pregnancy promote the growth of fibroids.
    • Other growth factors – Substances responsible in the body to maintain tissues such as insulin growth factors may affect the growth of fibroids.
    • Extracellular matrix – It is a matrix responsible to stick the cells together. ECM is increased in fibroids and makes them fibrous.

According to Ayurveda, uterine fibroids are caused due to imbalance of the doshas, especially, the Kapha dosha. If there is bleeding, the other doshas also are involved, it means the pitta is aggravated, and therefore the uterus being the spot of the Apana Vata, a fault within the vata is implied.

In most cases, fibroids don’t have any symptoms; however, there are some common signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids. These are:
    • Heavy menstrual bleeding & cramping
    • Menstrual periods lasting more than a week
    • Pelvic pressure or pain
    • Frequent urination
    • Struggling to empty the bladder
    • Fecal impaction
    • Back pain or leg pains
    • Feeling Pain during Intercourse
    • Swelling  and enlargement of the Abdomen

Ayurveda is the biggest contributor to mankind for human longevity and wellbeing in the most natural possible way. Ayurveda can help to get rid of Fibroids in the best possible organic way with the help of authentic medication, dedicated therapy, and massages.

First, the holistic assessment of the health is done in which the Vaidya looks at the whole picture of the health and try to achieve a full understanding of the body through extensive examination. During the assessment, Vaidya determines what treatment plan will best suit the patient. Then, the treatment course starts followed by therapies depending on the conditions of the patient along with herbal medications wholesome and well-balanced cuisines, Yoga & meditation session, Pranayama sessions, and other fitness sessions to get rid of Fibroids.

In Ayurveda, the diagnosis procedures are two-pronged. One aims to establish the state and type of pathology and the second decides the mode of treatment. It is done through a holistic assessment of health. The Vaidya will have a look at the whole picture of the patient's health and try to achieve a full understanding. They observe, palpate, and interrogate the patients. The Vaidya determines the doshas or body constitution, the health of Dhatus (tissues), the strength of digestive fire, immunity, and as well as mental harmony. This involves asking extensive questions on a topic like a lifestyle, diet, personal and professional life, medical history, and any current problems. After knowing the constitution of the body through extensive examinations, the Vaidya will get an insight that which of the doshas are most likely to be in excess and which therapies and treatment plan will best suit the patient.

Risk factors are factors that do not seem to be a direct cause of any diseases but seem to be associated in any way. A risk factor makes the chance of getting a condition higher to suffer from it but does not always lead towards Fibroids. Some common risk factors are:

    • Race – Any woman of reproductive age may develop fibroids
    • Heredity - If an individual's mother or sister had fibroids, then the person is at an increased risk of developing them.
    • The onset of menstruation at an early age
    • Obesity
    • Vitamin D deficiency
    • Diet higher in red meat and lower in green vegetables, fruit and dairy
    • Drinking alcohol, beer, and other beverages

Different factors are responsible for the increase of fibroid risk in the body. However, some steps need to be taken in day-to-day life that can decrease the risk of fibroids. These are:

    • Wake up early in the morning
    • Eat a well-balanced diet
    • Exercise daily in the morning a minimum of half-hour
    • Massage body with herbal oils
    • Avoid junk, packed & oily food items
    • Take aloe Vera juice early in the morning to increase metabolism
    • Do brisk walking for a minimum of 25 minute daily

Ayurveda, with a holistic and non-invasive approach and utmost care comprised of proper lifestyle, diet modifications, herbal medications, Yoga & meditation & therapies such as Abhyangam, Sirodhara, Chakra Basti, etc based on the condition of the patient will help the patients to get rid of Fibroids.

Panchakarma therapy is also recommended to treat Fibroids. However, Panchakarma therapy is only prescribed to those patients who are fit for that particular Panchakarma procedure as per the guidelines dictated by classical Ayurvedic textbooks (Ashtangasangraha, Charaka Samhita, and Susrutha Samhita).

The treatment is decided by an expert Vaidya after assessing the body constitution and extensive examination of the imbalance of the doshas of the patient. The treatment focuses to balance the tri-dosha of the body and to eradicate slow- moving kapha.

Note: Internal medications and therapy are prescribed by an expert Ayurveda physician after complete assessment.

What is the ayurvedic viewpoint of structure and function of body?

The universe and the human body are made up of five basic elements collectively known as Panch Mahabhootas.  These five elements are Aakash (Ether/Sky), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Aapa (Water) & Prithvi (Earth). The sixth mandatory component of life is Atma (Life spirit) without which life winds up. The human body is made up of Doshas (Bio humor), Dhatus (Body matrix), and malas (excretable product).

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha called Tridoshas are physiological entities of the body that are responsible to carry out all the functions of the body. Dhatus are the structural entities of the body. Rasa (Plasma), Rakta (Blood cells), Mamsa (Muscular tissue), Meda (fatty tissue), Majja (Bone marrow), Asthi (Bone tissue) and Shukra (Hormonal & other secretions) are the Dhatus.  The unwanted or waste products of the body which are excretable produced in the body as by-products of metabolism. These products are known as malas which include sweda (sweat), pureesh (faeces), & mutra (urine). All the biotransformation within the body occurs through body channels (Srotases) which are the sites for the action of Agni.

What is the approach of life style according to Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, Lifestyle is divided into three parts. These are:

    • Dincharya: Diet and regimen for the day time
    • Ratricharya: Diet and regimen for the night
    • Ritucharya: Seasonal diet and regimen

One should also follow specific diet programmes after treatments for perfect health &, long disease free body status.

What is the definition of health according to Ayurveda?

Ayurveda has a very holistic concept of health. A disease-free body alone does not mean health. According to Ayurveda, those whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good, tissues of the body and natural urges are functioning properly, and whose mind, body, and spirit are full of bliss is a healthy person.

What is the importance of Ayurvedic procedures?

Ayurveda follows therapeutic measures either to prevent the disease or cure them. Ayurvedic procedures are done either to detoxify the body or as a prelude to strengthen the immune system.

Why one should go for Ayurveda treatment?

The history of Ayurveda is 5000 years old.  At present, globally this medicinal system has been adopted. Ayurveda and its treatment techniques have been proven very effective in many clinical studies. Ayurveda does not aim only to treat the sick person but also focuses to prevent illness in healthy people. Modern medicine tries to treat and remove the condition rather than treating the patient suffering from it.  Ayurveda makes a special contribution by addressing the uniqueness of each patient and helping the body to heal itself.

Why are most ayurvedic treatments time consuming?

Toxins that accumulate in the human body take a long time to manifest, as, in some diseases, the human body and mind get somewhat habituated to them. Removal of these at one go is practically impossible as it would also go against the wisdom of the body according to which the immune system works.

This is why ayurvedic treatments are time-consuming.

Does Ayurvedic medicines have any side effects?

Ayurvedic medicines are made from natural ingredients such as herbs and minerals under the supervision of expert Vaidyas. If it is taken according to the instructions of Vaidya, these medicines are safe and don’t have side effects. However, just taking the medicines is not enough as one needs to follow a proper diet and lifestyle to control the condition and works towards healing.

If not followed properly, then it may develop some problems and you can think it as side effects of medicines but in reality, it is caused due to fault in diet and lifestyle.

Is Ayurvedic treatment effective for Fibroids?

Ayurveda focuses on body type and lifestyle for fibroids. Taking a proper diet, doing physical activities like Yoga, Pranayama, etc, several massages and therapy, following the proper lifestyle will balance the tri-dosha of the body and help to treat fibroids.
